Opposition to the attack on Ukraine

Statement by the Scientific Council of the
Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences
on 24 February 2022
regarding the armed assault of the Russian Federation against Ukraine

  The Scientific Council of the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences strongly condemns the completely unjustified and unprovoked armed assault by the Russian Federation on Ukraine, which is flagrantly in violation of international law. The decision to attack taken by the Russian President Vladimir Putin has consequences that are difficult to predict, including the possibility of unleashing war on a global scale. In the name of all humanistic values, which are the source of every scientist's search for truth and are important for every human being, we call on the entire scientific community and all citizens of Russia and Belarus to be uncompromising in their protest and to take active measures to stop the ongoing armed violence against a sovereign state. Having drawn their experience from the global tragedy that was World War II – and especially, from the still living memory of the suffering experienced by the Russians and Belarusians themselves – the representatives of these nations should never have led to the bloodshed of innocent people, which is taking place today.


The Scientific Council of the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences expresses solidarity with the suffering Ukrainian nation and has the greatest sympathy for our Ukrainian friends who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves in this tragic situation. We will do everything in our power to ensure that the circumstances that have transpired do not affect the continuation of our long-standing and fruitful cooperation between Ukrainian and Polish scientists.
