Course for PhD Students and Students

Course for PhD Students and Students

Course entitled “X-ray free electron laser – XFEL” begins on October 16, 2023, as part of the program of the Warsaw Doctoral School of Exact and Biomedical Sciences. The course will cover interdisciplinary research using X-ray lasers on free electrons in the fields of physics, materials science, chemistry, and biology.   The course will include the following topics:

  1. XFEL vs. synchrotron and laser sources – differences and similarities.
  2. Sources and parameters of XFEL radiation.
  3. Interaction of X-ray radiation with matter.
  4. Basic X-ray research techniques: high- and low-angle scattering, crystallography, and spectroscopy.
  5. Optics and diagnostics of XFEL.
  6. Research using XFEL: biology, chemistry, atomic structure of materials, materials under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, magnetism, electronic structure of solids, nonlinear X-ray optics.
  7. Preparation of research projects on XFEL.

The course will be taught by several lecturers, experts from selected fields related to the applications of free electron laser radiation:: dr hab. inż. Ryszard Sobierajski, prof. IF PAN, prof. Wojciech Gawełda (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan), prof. Maciej Kozak (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan), dr hab. inż. Marcin Sikora, prof. AGH and dr hab. inż. Jerzy Antonowicz, prof. Warsaw Uniwersity of Technology , dr Wojciech Błachucki (Institute of Nuclesar Physics PAS), dr hab. Katarzyna Jarzembska, prof. UW (University of Warsaw)
