Professor Marek Godlewski

Biographical Information

8th of November 1998

Born 30 July 1950. In 1973, after a 5-year study at the Physics Department of Warsaw University, obtained M.Sc. degree in Physics.

In 1973 employed in the institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Department of Solid State Spectroscopy. In 1978 defended Ph.D. Thesis on the Electron Spin Resonance studies of the chromium impurity in II-VI semiconductors.

During 1980/1981 employed on the post-doctoral Senior Research position at the Physics Department of Hull University UK.

After returning from the UK was nominated the Adjunct (Assistant Professor) position in the Department of Solid State Spectroscopy of the Institute of Physics.

In 1984 (3 months) and then 1985 (2 months) visited Linköping University (group of prof. B. Monemar) and started a close co-operation with this University on the Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance characterisation of semiconductors and, recently, on PL kinetics in semiconductor quantum wells.

In 1985 nominated a head of the Optical Spectroscopy Laboratory in the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences.

In the 1986 granted habilitatus dr. degree for the study of recombination processes in semiconductor-based phosphors. For this research activities obtained the reward of the Director of the Institute of Physics, the individual reward granted by the Physics and Chemistry Division of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Silver Medal of Merit from the Polish Government.

From 1986 until 1990 responsible for the scientific project of the Polish Academy of Sciences on the optical properties of the rare earth doped compounds. For this activity obtained in 1990 the scientific reward of Polish Academy of Sciences.

In 1987 employed on the Senior Research position in the Department of Physics and Measurement Technology, Linköping University, Sweden.

After returning to Poland nominated the secretary of the Organising Committee of the ICPS conference Warsaw 1990.

From 1989 employed on the Docent (Associate Professor) position in the Institute of Physics. At the end of this year nominated a head of the Solid State Spectroscopy Department (about 45 employees), which heads since then.

In 1990 joined the Research Council of the Institute of Physics.

In 1990 (2 months) and 1991 (3 months) visited the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, group of prof. C.A.J. Ammerlaan. Continues also the co-operation with group of Prof. Bo Monemar from Linköping University of Sweden (1 month long research visits through last 8 years).

In 1993 nominated as a Professor of Solid State Physics by the President of Poland and got a professor position in Polish Academy of Sciences.

In 1994 was nominated for the position of 2nd secretary of the European Rare Earth and Actinide Society. Member of organising and program committees of several international conferences. This year he was the chairman of the international “Jaszowiec” school on physics of compound semiconductors.

From 1996, in addition to the position of the head of Department, he is responsible for the scientific group (ON-4.2) of physics and technology of epilayers of semiconducting materials.

His research concentrates on the radiative and nonradiative recombination processes in doped semiconductors and ionic compounds and on excitonic recombination processes in thin films, quantum wells and superlattices of II-VI and III-V semiconductors with the use of optical (photoluminescence, magneto-optics and time-resolved photoluminescence) and magnetic resonance (ESR, ODMR and ODCR) techniques.

He is the author or the coauthor of more than 300 scientific papers and conference communications presented at the major International Conferences.

In 1991-1994 headed two grants of KBN. In 1994 got sponsorship from the Foundation of Polish Science within the SEZAM program to buy F-120 atomic layer epitaxy reactor to grow thin films of II-VI materials and from KBN to up-grade an electron spin resonance spectrometer. At present he is a head of one project grant of KBN and major researcher in four other. He is also a head of one of the scientific programs in the Institute of Physics.

He has been married in 1973 and has one son born in 1974.
